Diamond Solitaire Mahjong is a time tile-matching game that mimics some aspects of online Chinese Mahjong. The player's goal is to clear a gradient dark green marble background of white tiles layered in a classic Mahjong Turtle pattern before they run out of time. They also attempt to earn the highest possible score.
The "Diamond" portion of the game refers to the icons on the tiles. Instead of traditional imagery, the tiles display various colors and types of cut jewels. The player can only remove identical uncovered tiles in pairs. When they select tiles for a match, both pieces must have at least one open left or right edge.
The game makes play extremely difficult by presenting some jewel designs with only slight differences. For example, two tiles that have the same color and type of jewel might have slightly different shades of color, light reflections or cut lines.
Diamond Solitaire Mahjong tracks the remaining time in the upper-left area. It displays the number of potential matches per move and the number of collected tiles in the upper-center area. The score appears to the right of this information next to an orange jewel. In the lower-right corner, the game offers the player a hint button marked with a flashlight icon.
If the player fails to clear the board, the game saves their score, which includes the base score, a time bonus, their completion status percentage, and a total score. It also provides them with access to a global daily leaderboard and prompts them to try again.
